The authors derived the name for 'The Roots of
Consciousness' from a statement by cosmologist Arthur M. Young who
cautioned against seeking only the flowers of consciousness. Although
flowers provide moments of pleasure and delight, they are soon forgotten
after they wilt and die.
The flowers of consciousness are the exquisitely intriguing foliage blooming in psychology's borderland - telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, astrology, astral projection, UFO's, mysticism, and other occult hidden, psi, or inner phenomena. These things may seem strange or supernatural to western man's current ways of thinking - or even non-existent. However, it is our contention that they are not paranormal and therefore unreal or insignificant; indeed they are rooted in the essential core of our cosmic existence, in our cultural history, in our scientific knowledge, and in our social institutions.
The exploration of consciousness really has its origins in sparks of wonderment at our existence which have recurred many times in different ways. These are the simplest experiences which underlie the science of consciousness - a newly emerging disciplines which, like music, art, medicine or physical education, involves intense personal commitment as well as objective understanding. This book is designed to satisfy all levels of consciousness.
